Electricity Market Structure
Alberta's electricity system is owned and operated by a mix of investor-owned and municipally owned companies. With the passage of the Electric Utilities Act, Alberta's electricity market opened for customers to choose their electricity supplier beginning on January 1, 2001. Recent refinements to the Act have enhanced the retail electricity market by removing barriers for energy companies looking to enter the Alberta electricity market.
All energy retailers must register with the Department of Alberta Energy, and the Market Surveillance Administrator enforces the market rules. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board continues to review most regulated energy and delivery charges through open and transparent hearings.
About Switching in Alberta
To be eligible to switch, your company must be located in one or more of these utilities' service territories:
- Epcor
- Enmax
- Direct Energy
- Fortis
The first step in switching your business' electricity service is completing a Load Release Form (LRF) that allows Constellation NewEnergy to gather historical electricity usage data from your utility. This data is necessary to analyze your power consumption patterns and to develop a proposal that is customized to the needs of your business.
Download, complete and forward this document to get started.
You will then sign a retail Electricity Supply Agreement stating the specific product your price for electric service and the duration of the agreement. After that, the enrollment process is simple. Our local operations team will work to provide a seamless transition from the utility as your electricity accounts are transferred to our service. Although Constellation NewEnergy will process and bill your company's electricity consumption, you will still receive the same wires service from your current wires provider.
