 | A REC is a renewable energy certificate. It represents the environmental attributes of one MWh (megawatt hour) of generation. A tradable commodity, a REC can be bought and sold separately from electricity itself. Companies that purchase RECs are supporting the development and production of renewable energy. RECs are created when renewable power is delivered to the electric grid. Not every business is able to change its operations to run on wind or hydroelectric energy - but any company can buy RECs. When a company purchases RECs, it provides direct financial support to renewable energy. RECs are recognized as an effective way to promote sustainable energy, without requiring a switch from a company's existing energy supplier. Each megawatt-hour of renewable energy delivered to the power grid results in the creation of one renewable energy certificate. The more renewable energy we place onto the grid, the less nonrenewable energy (such as coal, nuclear, oil and gas) is required to fill our country's energy needs. Types of RECs Constellation NewEnergy offers two standard renewable energy products. Our wind product is Green-e Energy certified, and we also offer a hydro electric product. Certified RECs meet the stringent, nationally respected standards established by Green-e Energy, America's leading, renewable energy certification program.
