Electricity Market Structure Competition and choice in electricity began in New York in the late 1990s when the State restructured its electric utility industry through negotiated settlements between the utilities and various stakeholders. In New York, all customers are able to choose a competitive supplier, also known as an energy service company (ESCO). Rate structures and rates for non-residential customers vary by usage and by utility.
About Switching in New York Serving business customers in New York, Constellation NewEnergy has been approved by the New York Department of Public Service and certified by the utilities in the State as well as the Long Island Power Authority. To be eligible to switch to our services, your company must be located in one or more of the following service territories:
- Consolidated Edison Company of New York (ConEd)
- Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NIMO)
- New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG)
- Orange & Rockland Utilities Inc.
- Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation
- Rochester Gas & Electric Corp.
The first step in switching your business' electricity service is completing a Customer Usage Information Authorization form that allows Constellation NewEnergy to gather historical electricity usage data from your utility. This data is necessary to analyze your power consumption patterns and to develop a proposal that is customized to the needs of your business.
You will then sign a retail Electricity Supply Agreement, which will include a customer disclosure page that summarizes the terms and conditions of the agreement. After our agreement is signed, the enrollment process is simple. Our local operations team will work to provide a seamless transition from the utility as your electricity accounts are transferred to our service. Depending on the utility protocols, the enrollment notification must be sent between two and three-and-a-half weeks in advance of your next regularly scheduled meter reading.
